Are you thinking of spending some time in the beautiful town of Schwerin? Or are you looking for a day trip in Northern Germany? Do you want to know what things to do in Schwerin? Then you’re in the right place.

Schwerin has lots to offer and is a perfect getaway for introverts who want to see a wonderful castle, lovely streets, and a great lake.

I’ve recently visited Schwerin for the first time, and I was surprised by its size but enchanted by its beauty.

I went to Schwerin mainly to visit Schwerin Castle, which has recently become a UNESCO World Heritage site (well deserved!).

But I realised there were many more things to do in Schwerin than visiting the castle, so here we go.

Schwerin – Things to Know

Schwerin is the capital of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is one of the oldest cities in Germany, dating back to 1018.

It is often called the “City of Seven Lakes ” because it is surrounded by several lakes. The largest lake and one of the main destinations is Lake Schwerin (Schweriner See).

Schwerin has (only) around 95.000 inhabitants. I was surprised by its size. I expected it to be bigger. But the lack of locals and, to some extent, tourists made it a wonderful place to walk around without being bothered by other people.

It is still the second largest city of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern after Rostock.

Things to do in Schwerin

1. Visit Schwerin Castle

If you want to see a stunning castle, you’re in the right place.

It is located on an island in the middle of Lake Schwerin. And what I find curious but also great is that the state parliament is located in the castle.

I did a guided tour – which I can only recommend – and the end of the tour was at the beginning of the parliament. It was surreal seeing the modern rooms compared to the old castle chambers.

The entry price is absolutely okay at 8.50 euros for an adult. The guided tour costs 3 euros extra. During the summer season, they have three guided tours in German and one in English every day.

The information about the guided tours can be found on the castle website.

The view over the castle gardens is just magnificent.

2. Take a boat tour on Lake Schwerin

I just love boat tours! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. However, I didn’t take a tour that day, because I’m lacking the funds at the moment.

Green grass followed by blue lake water, and blue sky with a few clouds.

But I did see the boats that take people out onto the lake, and they looked very inviting. They’re located right next to the castle.

They have several different routes. Two of those take about 1.5 hours and the golden hour tour takes 2.5 hours.

The main route costs 21.50 euros for an adult which is a fair price for a boat tour and you can even take your pet mouse – according to their website.

3. Visit Zoo Schwerin

Schwerin has a great zoo, at least according to a friend of mine. I’m not a big fan of zoos, so I’m taking her word.

It takes about 45 minutes to get from the castle to the zoo, but any walk through Schwerin will be a nice walk.

The zoo covers an area of about 25 hectares, so lots to see. There over 1800 animals from around 150 species.

And what I always like in a zoo is they have a petting zoo!! I love me some good goat time.

4. Walk to Schwerin Cathedral

Schwerin has a beautiful cathedral which is located in the town centre, known as Schweriner Dom in German.

It is known for its Gothic architecture, and it’s a wonderful sight.

You can go inside the cathedral and partake in guided tours. Instead of asking for a certain fee, they ask for a voluntary donation.

5. Marvel at Paintings and Sculptures at the State Museum Schwerin

If you’re more into art than me, then Schwerin offers its own state museum.

The building itself is already a sight for sore eyes, and it offers different exhibitions, so you should find something you like.

However, the museum is currently being renovated, meaning it is not open to the public.

It does look quite empty at the moment.

Things to Do in Schwerin – Recap

Schwerin might not be the most bustling city in Germany, but it’s still worth a visit if you like beautiful castles, lovely lakes, and just an overall pretty town.

There are plenty of restaurants where you can go, and you might end up spending some money in one of the shopping centres between visiting the castle and stepping into the zoo.

I truly think that Schwerin is a great city for introverts as the number of people and visitors is fairly limited. It’s a quiet town with lots of green areas, so you’ll always be able to retreat.

It’s worth a day trip to explore Schwerin and get to know some of its stunning secrets.
